Church of Jesús. How to get there

The Church of Jesús is one of the oldest buildings on the island, and one of those that has changed the most over time. Its origins go back to the 15th century, to what seems to have been a place of prayer for sailors, until Franciscan monks took it over. When the monks moved to the Convent church, it remained as a chapel. Its original single-nave building follows the defensive structures typical of the island. That structure, which has barely survived in Ibiza’s churches, changed over time, and new needs gave rise to the rector’s house, from the 17th century, and the vicar’s house, a century later, when it was declared a parish church.

The typical porch is much more recent, from the late 19th or early 20th century. Its historical importance is great, and its cultural value is just as high: inside is the Gothic altarpiece painted by the Valencian artists Rodrigo de Osona and his son Francesc between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It is about 7.5 metres high, has 25 panels and shows the Virgin and Child at its centre. It was restored and put back on display in 2018.
