History of the Convent Church, Ibiza

The Convent Church, or Church of Santo Domingo, was born together with the Dominican convent. The friars lived next to the church of Jesús, and in 1587 they moved inside the city walls because of pirate attacks. The following year the Universitat, the island’s government at the time, gave them the land it had bought to build the monastery. Work began in 1592, and the church was not finished until more than a century later.
In 1730 the church underwent major alterations after the explosion of the Santa Llúcia gunpowder store. It has a single nave with five chapels on each side, and its three tiled domes in the Valencian style are one of the most recognisable sights of Dalt Vila. In 1835 the Dominicans were expelled and the convent was used as a hospital, a prison and a school; today it is the town hall. Since 1928 the church has been the parish church of Sant Pere.
How to get to the Convent Church
This important historical and religious landmark stands inside the walled precinct of Dalt Vila. From its walls you get the most classic postcard views of Ibiza Town, and its views over the La Marina quarter and the harbour are legendary. Getting there is easy, although the climb is a little tiring. The Convent Church is on the main street of Dalt Vila: just keep heading uphill. Whether you come in through the main cobbled gate in the walls, the Portal de ses Taules, or through the secondary paved entrance below the Sant Pere bastion, you will reach the Santa Llúcia bastion, and the church is right next to it.
