Tourism in Ibiza arrived hand in hand with sun, partying and beaches. The beaches and coves of Ibiza are countless, and some can only be reached by boat. The first tourists came to enjoy a paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean.
Many found a place here to live and express themselves freely, an ode to freedom and to nature. It was the start of another tourist Ibiza: the old terraces, meeting points of the hippy world, turned into the biggest nightlife venues on the planet, to the point of marking the start and the end of the season.
When the seasons grew shorter and competition increased inside and outside Europe, the island began to look at a treasure that wasn’t hidden, just forgotten: its heritage. Cultural tourism made its way in Ibiza, who would have thought, and its rich heritage had to be declared a World Heritage Site before it finally received the value it deserved.
Visiting Ibiza Town
However you arrive in Ibiza, the image of the huge walled fortress dominating the skyline will stay with you. Dalt Vila, the starting point of a journey back to medieval times, rises above the town’s main valley. It is one of the best-preserved acropolises in the Mediterranean and offers a unique route that begins at the Ses Taules gate and ends at the foot of the Cathedral.
Treasures of Ibiza Town
Along the way you come across sights that have travelled the world on postcards: the parade ground and the bastions of the walls, with their spectacular views. The Chapel of San Ciriaco and the Church of Santo Domingo have been places of devotion for a people who have managed to keep their most unique traditions alive. The buildings of the Archaeological Museum and Madina Yabisa, built on top of the old Arab walls, show how Ibiza Town has survived the passage of time.
Once you finish your tour of the Middle Ages, you can travel even further back in time. The Punic necropolis of Puig des Molins, also a World Heritage Site, opens a door to the past, with its monographic museum as the best showcase. Walking among its tombs is a moving experience.
After all that history, Plaça des Parc is a must: it is the meeting point of today’s Ibiza, with quiet terraces where you can escape the summer heat or shelter from the winter cold. Next to it, the Vara de Rey promenade hosts many of the town’s events and festivities. And to round it all off, the nightlife around the port: seeing people of every nationality smile as the street parades go by is the best advertising a tourist Ibiza could ever have.

Festivals in Eivissa town
These are the town’s traditional festivals, held every year on the same dates:
- Our Lady of Mount Carmel: 16 July. A procession from Sant Elm, in La Marina, to the port, and from there by sea.
- Festes de la Terra: first half of August, with two main days.
- Our Lady of the Snows: 5 August, the first main day of the Festes de la Terra.
- Sant Ciriac: 8 August, the town’s patron saint. It commemorates the Catalan conquest of 1235 and ends with fireworks over the port at midnight.
