The monastery of Sant Cristòfol is a charming spot on the way up to the cathedral
On your way up to the cathedral square you will come across the monastery of Sant Cristòfol, also known as the convent of ses Monges Tancades. It is a building with plenty of history: it was founded at the end of the 16th century in a group of houses bought to set up a convent of Augustinian nuns.
The nuns’ convent
It is a simple building with no remarkable decoration, and today it is home to a community of cloistered nuns. The visit is short and the main thing you see is the altar behind the glass screen, but there is a second door that is well worth it, especially if you need a pick-me-up: the nuns make sweets that you can buy in the building next door by ringing the bell.
Its history
In 1599 the houses bought to build the convent were handed over to the Augustinian nuns, and the convent was founded a year later. Ibizans know it as the convent of ses Monges Tancades, after the cloistered nuns who live there.
The convent church, dedicated to Saint Christopher, has a single nave covered by a pointed barrel vault. It was almost destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and was rebuilt decades later following the original design. The convent building was also renovated in the 1960s, respecting the original design: it is simple and austere, with no remarkable decorative features.
