Puget Museum, life before tourism

The Puget Museum opened in 2007. The collection belongs to the Ministry of Culture and the museum is run by Eivissa City Council. It permanently displays the legacy of the Ibizan painters Narcís Puget Viñas (1874-1960) and his son, Narcís Puget Riquer (1916-1983): 130 works in all, the highlights being the watercolours and drawings by Narcís Puget Riquer and the oil paintings and drawings by his father.

The collection is housed in Can Comasema, a stately Dalt Vila mansion probably dating from the 15th century and protected as a Site of Cultural Interest. Its most striking features are the inner courtyard and the windows.

Besides being adapted to conserve the works, the building was renovated, and today it is one of the most beautiful buildings we have had the chance to enjoy.

Of its three floors, only the ground floor and the upper floor are open to visitors; the basement is kept for the museum’s internal use. The ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions by different artists. On the upper floor, reached by an outside staircase, several rooms painted in pastel shades display the works of both painters, sometimes side by side.

Without going into critical judgements, the visit lets you see how the festivals and customs of 20th-century Ibiza have changed and recall landscapes that are now built up. You will also see that some traditions have survived the passing of time.
