Church of Santa Gertrudis, a colourful landmark

Work on the church of Santa Gertrudis the Martyr began in 1785 and was finished by the end of that same century. It looks very much like the island’s other churches, with their dual religious and defensive role, although its position in the middle of Ibiza kept it safe from attacks from the sea.

Its colours are quite unusual: the typical white façade is combined with bright orange details that give it a more artistic feel. The entrance porch, from the late 19th century, has an unusual image of Christ above the main door. The side walls are out of the ordinary too: one has a large number of doors and windows, rare in buildings of this kind, which suggests they were added to the original building later, as was the oven on the opposite wall.
