Church of San Lorenzo or Sant Llorenç

The Church of San Lorenzo is one of the most remote and peaceful churches on the island

Church of San Lorenzo

The church of Sant Llorenç, or San Lorenzo, lies in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja, in the village of the same name. It stands on the road from Sant Joan to Ibiza Town, nine kilometres from Sant Joan. Sant Llorenç is a quiet place that gets few visitors: a few cars carry on along the road towards Sant Miquel, but on the whole there is little traffic. The church sits on a small rise at the foot of a hill, and its whitewashed walls give it that sense of calm so typical of Ibiza’s churches.

What you will find at the church of Sant Llorenç

It is an 18th-century church, built by Bishop Abad i Lasierra, like so many others on the island, to bring the church closer to the faithful. It is one of the simplest churches you will find in Ibiza.

Layout of the Church of Sant Llorenç

It has a cross-shaped floor plan and an unusual porch, fully enclosed, which you enter through a door. The interior is simple too, with the presbytery at the far end. The highlight is the 19th-century chapel of the Mare de Déu del Roser. All the walls, except for a small tower at the back, have the typical whitewash.
