Marià Villangómez. A distinguished writer
In the shade of the church of Sant Miquel you will find the statue dedicated to Marià Villangómez
Marià Villangómez (1913-2002) was one of the most important writers in Ibizan literature. Born into a well-off family, he studied in Palma, Murcia, Barcelona and Valencia. He wrote both poetry and prose, and from 1946 he taught in Sant Miquel de Balansat, where he began a large body of work that went on to appear in many magazines and newspapers.
In 1989 he received the Premi d’Honor de les Lletres Catalanes, for his own work and also for his Catalan translations of important works.
Many believe that today’s Ibizan writers owe him a great deal, especially in the way they portray the island’s landscapes and its people.
Walking up to the statue
Getting to this tribute to Marià Villangómez is easy. The statue stands next to the church of Sant Miquel, in a very green landscape where the scent of the countryside fills the air. When you reach the village, turn left up the slope that climbs to the church: the way is marked by the Stations of the Cross along the road.
