The Caves of Sant Miquel are legendary formations once used by smugglers and pirates
The caves at the port of Sant Miquel are known as the Can Marçà caves. They are run by a private company and are one of the biggest geological discoveries on the island.
To get there, head for the port of Sant Miquel and follow the road that climbs to the top from the port. Once you have parked, you can walk to the cave entrance. From the viewpoint you will see the port of Sant Miquel and Illa Murada, the islet that gives its name to a subspecies of Pityusic wall lizard that lives on it.
A smugglers’ cave
The visit is guided and follows a path carved into the rock, with spectacular views of the cliff the cave sits on. Inside, in a cave that formed more than a hundred thousand years ago, a world of stalactites and water awaits you. Some areas, now fossilised, offer the sight of hundreds of teeth jutting from the ceiling. Many sections are still unexplored because the openings are too narrow.
In some areas you will see marks painted on the walls. The smugglers used them to find other ways out of the cave whenever there was a raid. The goods were hauled up from the sea through an opening to the outside.
To round things off, there is the artificial waterfall, complete with a sound and light show, and the illuminated natural lagoons, which impress everyone.
