Pont Vell, the old bridge or devil’s bridge
Pont Vell is the bridge that once linked Santa Eulària with the rest of the island
Pont Vell stands at the entrance to Santa Eulària des Riu, next to the new bridge that leads into the town. It is often said to be Roman, but that has never been proven, nor ruled out: its origin is still being studied. Estimates point to the 16th or 17th century, and it is known to have been rebuilt in the late 19th or early 20th century, which gave it its current look. To get there, we recommend heading down to the mouth of the river and walking up the promenade to the bridge: a lovely stroll among plants and gardens.
Pont Vell mythology
Pont Vell is full of legends, which is why it is known as the devil’s bridge. Tales of witchcraft and spells are part of Santa Eulària’s tradition, such as the souls of relatives turned into river flowers, or the pacts local farmers made with the devil to finish the bridge, among many others.
