Church of Es Cubells: history and how to get there

The church of Es Cubells is well worth a visit, above all for its views

Church of Es Cubells

At the end of the road to Es Cubells stands the church of Es Cubells. Es Cubells is one of the smallest villages on the island: its centre is little more than the church, perched on the edge of a huge cliff above the south coast of Sant Josep.

To get there, follow the same directions as for Es Cubells. Take the road from the airport to Sant Josep and, after seven kilometres, turn left towards the village. Six kilometres later, after crossing a small valley set quite high above sea level, the final roundabout tells you that you have arrived.

History of the church of Es Cubells

The story begins in 1855, when the exclaustrated Carmelite friar Francesc Palau settled in the area and asked Rome for a public oratory: the nearest one was in Sant Josep. Rome only granted him a private oratory in his house, which opened in 1864. It was a small nave, about eight metres deep, five wide and four high, where mass was not held regularly.

That oratory gradually grew into a church: it became a parish provisionally in 1933 and permanently in 1940, and the building work was completed in 1958. Today it is a small whitewashed church with buttresses along its sides, dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The two chapels next to the presbytery are those of the old hermitage, and beside the church there is a sculpture recalling Palau’s life.
