Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort is an ancient archaeological site with spectacular views.
Twelve centuries of history rest under the watchful eye of Es Vedrà. The Punic-Roman rural settlement of Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort was founded in the 5th century BC and was occupied, with interruptions, until the early 8th century. It lies on the plain between Cala d’Hort and Cala Truja, and it is not easy to find. To avoid getting lost, look for the road that runs from Es Cubells to Cala d’Hort Beach. Before you reach the cove, the road forks: take the right-hand branch. A little further on you will find Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort.
What you will see at the site
The main building had its heyday between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. A cistern more than four metres deep, a wine cellar, storerooms and dwellings arranged around a large courtyard have survived. A few metres away is the Punic necropolis, with around ten tombs and hypogea carved into the rock: Carlos Román Ferrer discovered and excavated it in 1917, and the whole complex was studied in depth between 1982 and 1984. The views, with Es Vedrà right in front, explain why people chose to live here for so long.
Next to the site there is also a restored Ibicenco farmhouse that serves as a venue of the Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza. A magical spot, this archaeological site of Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort.
