Torre de Portinatx: how to get there
The Torre de Portinatx offers spectacular views over the Portinatx coastline
In the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja, next to the well-known Cala Portinatx, stands the Torre de Portinatx, an 18th-century coastal defence tower completed in 1763. You can see it clearly from the water’s edge, but reaching it is more a matter of luck than of following a marked path.
To start, take the road that links the village of Sant Joan with the coast. You can go via the west, through the landscape of Cala Xarraca and Cala Xuclà, or via the east, passing close to Sant Vicent.
If you go via the west, before you reach Portinatx take the turning on the left signposted Sa Torre. Once the tower is in sight, leave the tarmac and carry on along a dirt track. This is important: although the paved road runs all the way to the tower, a protective fence blocks your way to the best views of the coast and of the Portinatx tower itself.
What you’ll find at the Torre de Portinatx
The tower was completed in 1763 to a design by the engineer Ballester and is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). For decades it was privately owned and left without maintenance, although its structure is in relatively good condition.
At the end of 2025 it was bought by the Consell d’Eivissa, which plans to restore it and open it to the public. In the meantime you can’t go inside, so you’ll have to admire it from the outside. The views it offers over the whole north coast alone make the trip to the Portinatx tower worthwhile, and it’s a great spot to take a souvenir photo.
