The church of Sant Josep is one of the most beautiful and best-known churches in Ibiza
The church of Sant Josep stands beside the road that runs through the centre of the village, at its highest point. This area was far from the sea and mountainous, so the people living on the plots of the old quartó (district) did not need the refuge that coastal villages looked for, and religious services were held in the parish church several kilometres away, in Sant Antoni. It was not until 1727, as the population of the nearby vendas (rural neighbourhoods) grew, that work on the church began. It was finished four years later.
Almost three hundred years of history
Although it was never at risk of pirate attacks, the church keeps the simplicity typical of the island’s religious buildings: a single square nave, several side chapels and a plain, whitewashed exterior. The main entrance has the customary porch and is crowned by a bell tower.
Much of the religious art inside the church of Sant Josep was wholly or partly destroyed during the Spanish Civil War; today an 18th-century altarpiece and several restored works survive.
