San Mateo or Sant Mateu d’Albarca Tourism Guide

A village well known for its wine and its rural landscapes. San Mateo takes its name from the church at the heart of its life.

Sant Mateu is not a town, not even a hamlet: it is a cluster of small farms set close together, arranged almost in a circle around the church of Sant Mateu d’Albarca.

It lies between Santa Inés, Sant Miquel and Santa Gertrudis, on a route that sees very little traffic. Only a few cars pass along its roads, almost always on their way to other villages or to one of the rural districts (vendas) that make up the parish.

What you will find in Sant Mateu

Thanks to the lie of the land and how little of its coast opens onto the sea as beaches, Sant Mateu has escaped the tourist frenzy. Its highlight is the Cala d’Albarca viewpoint, where pine forests spread over huge cliffs. This is very inaccessible terrain, and that has given rise to incredible routes for anyone who enjoys cycle touring.

Above all, Sant Mateu d’Albarca is a tribute to the peace of the countryside.

Church of Sant Mateu

Built between 1785 and 1796, this church stands right by the road, on the way from Sant Miquel to Santa Inés.
