Puig de Missa is the name of the hill crowned by the fortress church that presides over Santa Eulària. You can see it from anywhere in town, and the easiest way up is at the entrance to town: a sign pointing uphill with the name Puig de Missa invites you to leave the main road. We recommend parking near the Ethnological Museum and walking up to the top: there is little parking space up there, and you’ll enjoy the scenery on the way.
Five centuries of living history
The area, declared a picturesque site in 1952 and now a Site of Cultural Interest, keeps its traditional whitewashed Ibizan houses and the tradition of flowers that has always gone with it. That blend produces scenes like the one at the Barrau Museum.
The church of Puig de Missa seems to date from the 16th century, although it was very probably built on top of an older structure, given its view over a wide stretch of sea and the whole Santa Eulària river. Its outer shape is striking: although it originally had a single nave, chapels, the vicar’s and the priest’s houses and the sacristy were added over time, and today you can barely make out its original floor plan.
The porxo (porch) is just as curious, with a window looking out over the hills and a door leading to the Missa cemetery. Also look out for the small garden with a few graves that you’ll find along the way.
