Torre des Carregador: how to get to the tower
From the Torre des Carregador you get stunning views of the coast
If you have been to Playa d’en Bossa, you will surely remember the tower you can see in the distance. Its silhouette, at the end of the beach furthest from Ibiza Town, is hard to miss. But reaching the Torre des Carregador is far from easy, because of the steep, rocky stretch that begins where the sand ends.
If you go by car, the most comfortable and safest option, take the road that links Ibiza Town with Ses Salines. As you enter the Ses Salines area, a short way in, you will see a turn-off signposted to the tower, also known as the salt tower. This was once the site of the salt jetty, until, in times of peace, it was replaced by the current jetty behind Ses Salines Beach.
The last stretch is a dirt track that leaves you right at the foot of the tower.
The role of the Torre des Carregador
The defence towers had different roles depending on where they stood. The Torre des Carregador was used both as a lookout and for protection. The views bear witness to its role as a watchtower: they stretch from Formentera to the castle of Ibiza, a flat strip of coastline now covered with sunloungers and hotels, but still impressive.
Its second role, protecting the salt workers, turned it into a shelter for two hundred people, mostly labourers. Because of its strategic importance, it was the only tower with a hearth inside.
To defend itself, the Torre des Carregador has a projection that protected those guarding the main entrance. Through a chute, this projection connects to an opening above the door, from which liquids and objects were thrown at attackers.
